Toulon earn victory (38-11) and a bonus point against Pau!

Rugby Club Toulonnais won 38-11 at the Stade Mayol against Pau and earnt a bonus point, last Saturday, on day 17 of the Top 14.

After the defeat against Agen, Toulon had to bounce back on their home ground and started the game fairly well, as they kept the ball in their opponent’s side. Rhys Webb then found an opening and scored his first try of the season! François Trinh-Duc converted it and Toulon were leading 7-0.

A few seconds later, the red and black three-quarters found free space thanks to Louis Carbonel and Josua Tuisova. The ball was passed on to Trinh-Duc, who literally handed Facundo Isa a try, as the Argentine player also scored his first one this season! Toulon were 14-0 up after fifteen minutes.

Pau then had most of the ball possession for a dozen minutes. Foley grabbed the ball after a line-out five metres from the Toulon in-goal area and hooker Quentin Lespiaucq scored the visiting team’s first try. 14-5 to Toulon.

After a penalty converted by Antoine Hastoy from fifty metres, Pau were back into the game, but Toulon kept the ball and, after several moves, Josua Tuisova scored the home team’s third try. Despite the wind, Trinh-Duc managed to convert it from the left-hand side of the pitch and Toulon were leading 21-8.

Both teams then converted a penalty and the score at half-time was 24-11.

Our men in red and black defended in their own side for ten minutes into the second half, until Mamuka Gorgodze put his team back into attacking mode. Rhys Webb kicked the ball to Daniel Ikpefan, who went on to score a fourth try, synonymous with a bonus point! François Trinh-Duc converted it again and Toulon were leading 31-11.

At the last minute, after the ball was won back by Raphaël Lakafia, Anthony Meric concluded a splendid counter-attack initiated by Louis Carbonel and Bruce Devaux, making it 38-11.

Toulon remain in tenth spot in the Top 14, level with Montpellier. Next Sunday, our men in red and black will play away against Perpignan on day 18 of the Top 14.
